WINNIPEG - Ryan Nugent-Hopkins goal was the turning point as the Edmonton Oilers overcame a two-goal deficit to beat the Winnipeg Jets 3-2 in pre-season action Wednesday night. And linemate Jordan Eberle believes some of the prospects should get credit for making it happen. It might have been just before that, he said of Nugent-Hopkins second-period goal.We had a couple of shifts in our third and fourth lines, some young guys went out there had some zone pressure against them and we were able to capitalize on a shot there.Nugent-Hopkins agreed. That line of (Kale) Kessy, (Tyler) Pitlick and (Travis) Ewanyk had a big shift for us, he said.Ewanyk and Kessy played last season for Edmontons AHL franchise in Oklahoma City as did Pitlick a although he also played 10 games with the Oilers.Bogdan Yakimov and Justin Schultz also scored for Edmonton in the second period. Before that it had been all Jets.TJ Galiardi got things started on a first-period breakaway off a long pass from Will ONeill and beat Laurent Brossoit at 14:09. Brossoit played last season in the ECHL and finished with Edmontons AHL farm team in Oklahoma City.Jets forward Evander Kane had a breakaway as well in the first and earned a penalty shot on a hook but hit the crossbar. Wednesday night was the debut of the Kane, Mark Scheifele, Blake Wheeler line.Nugent-Hopkins took the first penalty of the game late in the first period and the Jets opened the second with 1:19 left in their power play. Matt Halischuk cashed in at 1:11 off a pass from Kane as he snapped the puck past Brossoits glove. We definitely rope-a-doped em. I mean early, it seemed like they were playing in our end quite a bit, said Eberle.Galiardi said the Jets gave it away after their strong start. It was more what we did, not what they did, said the off-season acquisition from the Calgary Flames.Every chance they had and every goal they got was basically our doing. We gave them the opportunities and thats the kind of team they are. Theyve got a lot of skill and if you give them those two-on-ones and odd-man rushes theyre going to score. It was Edmontons second pre-season win. The Jets are now 1-1.The Oilers made Brossoit work pretty hard in the second a at one point the Jets were ahead 17-8 on shots a but Nugent-Hopkins finally got the Oilers on the board with a slick shot as he rushed past Jets defenceman Jacob Trouba to beat Michael Hutchinsons glove.Yakimov tied the game off a cross-net pass from Vladimir Tkachev at 16:03 and with just nine seconds left in the period Tkachev fed Schultz in front of the Winnipeg net to make it 3-2. The Oilers ended up outshooting the Jets 12-10 in the second. As a measure of how the complexion of the game changed, the Jets had managed only two shots in about 20 minutes of hockey midway through the third period while the Oilers had 20 in the same time span.Tyler Rimmer relieved Brossoit for the third period but Hutchinson stayed in the Winnipeg net.The Jets finally regained some momentum but Halischuk hit the crossbar with just over three minutes left on what could have been the tying goal.Despite the loss, Winnipeg coach Paul Maurice liked what he saw from some of the young players he had in the lineup.I think Nik Ehlers showed flashes in each of the two games . . . I really liked Nicky Petan in the middle, in the centre face-off . . . Adam Lowrys just smart kind of wherever he goes. . . and (Josh) Morrissey, another step better. He said overall they were too happy with themselves midway through the second, stopped doing what had been working until then and paid for it.Thats human nature.Maurice also liked the way Kane and Scheifele helped kill penalties. The teams each took three but the Jets managed to kill all of theirs without giving up a goal.Notes a The Jets sent six more of their young prospects back to their junior teams Wednesday: Axel Blomqvist, Eric Comrie, Chase De Leo, Jan Kostalek, Jimmy Lodge and Nelson Nogier.Follow @tsedmonds on Twitter Jim Brown Jersey . HEROES P.K. Subban The Canadiens defenceman put up a goal and two assists in a 6-2 win against Los Angeles Friday. Subban now has 13 points (5 G, 8 A) in his past 14 games, a span during which he has maintained his team-leading 53.7% Corsi. Nicklas Backstrom Washingtons playmaking centre had a hat trick in Saturdays 4-2 win over Tampa Bay. They were Backstroms first goals in 10 games, but he still has 14 points (4 G, 10 A) in his past 11 games. LW Alex Ovechkin and RW Tom Wilson each had two assists; Wilson has four points, all assists, in the past four games. Kris Letang The Penguins puck-moving blueliner scored a couple goals in Saturdays 4-3 loss to Columbus. Letang has eight points (4 G, 4 A) during a five-game point streak. ZEROES Flames forwards Joe Colborne (1 shot attempt for, 13 against, 7.1%) and Matt Stajan (1 attempt for, 9 against, 10.0%), who had missed so much time early in the season, were stuck in the defensive zone in Fridays 3-1 loss at Pittsburgh. Brandon Bollig (0 attempts, 8 against, 0.0%) was at the lowest end of the shot attempt spectrum. Erik Haula In just 6:57 of even-strength ice time against Arizona Saturday, Haula was on for one shot attempt for and 18 against (5.3%). Red-light district: Martin Jones Surrendered six goals on 20 shots against Montreal Friday. Its the first time in his career that hes surrendered six goals and first time this year allowing more than three goals in a game. Anton Khudobin Gave up five goals on 23 shots against Florida Saturday and the Hurricanes goaltender had been riding high with a save percentage of .926 until this years .892 mark. Hes also winless in nine starts. Ryan Miller Allowed five goals on 23 shots in a 5-1 loss to The Rangers Saturday and hes stuck with a miserable .900 save percentage this season. BLACKHAWKS-BLUE JACKETS SWAP Jeremy Morin The 23-year-old winger didnt have any points in 15 games with the Blackhawks this season, but hes managed to be a possession ace (61.7%) since the start of last season while playing mostly a fourth-line role for Chicago. Morin does have something of a scorers pedigree, however, scoring 55 goals in 117 AHL games since the start of 2012-13 and should get an opportunity to play in a scoring role with the depleted Blue Jackets. Tim Erixon A first-round pick of Calgary in 2009, Erixon had played 70 NHL games with the Rangers and Blue Jackets before getting a new start in Chicago. Hes been a third-pair/spare-part defenceman and the Blackhawks have a number of those David Rundblad, Klas Dahlbeck, Adam Clendending, T.J. Brennan looking for playing time since Trevor van Riemsdyk got hurt. As it is, Erixon should get a decent opportunity to play regularly in Chicagos top six and he can sink or swim based on that performance. LINEUP NEED TO KNOW Sidney Crosby The face of the NHL is now more swollen as Crosby has officially been diagnosed with the mumps. He heads into his quarantine with no goals and two assists in his past five games. Zdeno Chara Bostons difference-maker on the blueline returned Thursday after missing 19 games with a knee injury. Hes not in prime form yet, but having him available to eat up minutes will help the Bruins beleaguered defence. Mike Green Washingtons puck-moving defenceman returned Thursday but played under 18 minutes in his first two games back. In 21 games this season, Green has played fewer than 18 in seven games, five of them in the past six games. Derick Brassard Has been diagnosed with mumps, but after a pair of assists against Vancouver Saturday, has seven points (2 G, 5 A) during a five-game point streak. Mike Cammalleri The Devils forward played only 6:57 Saturday at Dallas before leaving with a lower-body injury. Rob Klinkhammer Recently acquired from Arizona, Klinkhammer moved up the depth chart to play with Evgeni Malkin and Blake Comeau Saturday. Ben Lovejoy The Ducks defenceman returned to action Friday after missing six weeks with 21 games with a broken hand. Stephen Weiss The resurgent Red Wings forward suffered an injured shoulder Friday, then missed action Saturday. Travis Morin The productive AHLer (24 points in 23 AHL GP this year) is getting another chance with the struggling Stars, and was effective on a line with Erik Cole and Curtis McKenzie all three with better than 75% possession with more defensive zone starts in a 4-3 win against New Jersey Saturday. Sam Gagner Arizona made Gagner a healthy scratch Saturday. He has 10 points (3 G, 7 A) in 29 games this season, on a career-low scoring pace (0.34 points per game). Chris Phillips The Ottawa Senators changed coaches and that changed the approach, as the veteran Phillips, who had been playing 22:22 per game his most since 2007-2008! was a healthy scratch for Saturdays shootout win at Boston. Ryan Suter Minnesotas workhorse blueliner, who leads the league with 29:27 time on ice per game, played 33:47, and recorded two assists, in Saturdays 4-3 win at Arizona. Suter has the second and third-highest single-game ice time totals this season. Ryan Ellis Nashvilles blueliner has taken on a bigger role, especially recently, as this top five single-game ice times of the season have all come in the past seven games, with his ice time ranging between 21:37 and 24:25 during those high points in usage. Robyn Regehr The veteran rearguard played a season-high 25:33 against Toronto Sunday. Paul Stastny The Blues centre played 12:43 Saturday, in his return to Colorado. Its been a disappointing start to the season for Stastny, who has 12 points (7 G, 5 A) in 22 games, his lowest scoring rate (0.55 points per game) of his career to go with subpar (49.7%) possession. SHORT SHIFTS Stars C/RW Tyler Seguin had a goal and an assist in Saturdays 4-3 win over Neww Jersey.ddddddddddddHe leads the league with 23 goals and 38 points after scoring 23 points (16 G, 7 A) in the past 17 gamesRangers LW Rick Nash had a pair of assists in New Yorks 5-1 win at Vancouver Saturday, and had another in Sundays 2-0 win at Edmonton giving him 12 points during a 10-game pointBlues D Kevin Shattenkirk recorded a goal and an assist in St. Louis 3-2 overtime win at Colorado Saturday.
