BOISE, Idaho -- Western Michigan couldnt cap its turnaround season with its first bowl victory in school history. Air Force beat the Broncos 38-24 on Saturday night in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl, dropping them to 0-6 in bowl games. Western Michigan was 8-5 this season after going 1-11 last year. This group accomplished an awful lot, Western Michigan coach P.J. Fleck said. Im proud of this football team. We had the greatest turnaround in MAC history, but were still not there yet. Air Force knows how to win and deserves a ton of credit. Western Michigan, which used the motto Row The Boat all season, was in the right place for that motto Saturday. Playing in a driving rainstorm on a waterlogged blue field, the Broncos tried to row themselves back into the game after falling behind 23-10 after three quarters. Pinned at their own 8, Western Michigan embarked on a nine play, 92-yard drive that was capped by the second of three touchdown passes from Zach Terrell to Corey Davis. The 35-yard hookup made it 23-17 with 13:26 to play. After holding the Falcons, Western Michigans Daniel Braverman returned a punt for a touchdown and appeared to pull his team even. The play was called back because of an illegal block in the back. It was a penalty, Fleck said. We didnt need the block. Youre not going to beat a team like that making that many mistakes. Western Michigan moved into Air Force territory, but the comeback ended quickly. Terrell was hit while scrambling by Falcon linebacker Shane Proctor and fumbled. Air Force defensive back Dexter White scooped up the loose ball and returned it 60 yards for the clinching touchdown. That was big, Air Force linebacker Jordan Pierce said. Im proud of our defence. That touchdown really turned the game in our favour - thats all she wrote. Terrell said he was looking for Taylor when he started to scramble. I didnt realize someone was behind me, Terrell said. The ball is our program. I cant let that happen. I have to have a vice grip on the ball and cant let it get out. Fleck agreed that play was a back-breaker. Thats a 14-point swing in about 35 seconds, Fleck said. Weve got to learn from that and find ways to win. Thats how quick a football game can change. Davis finished with 8 catches for 176 yards and three touchdowns to earn the Most Valuable Player honours for his team. Western Michigan started strong, recovering a fumble on the first play from scrimmage that set up a 25-yard field goal by Andrew Haldeman and led 10-6 after Davis first touchdown grab, a 47-yarder. Air Force, though, rallied in the second quarter to take the lead for good. Sophomore running back Shayne Dalvern scored his second touchdown of the game on a career-long 55-yard run to give the Falcons a 13-10 advantage. Dalvern finished with 102 yards and two touchdowns to earn the Air Force MVP award. Dalvern also carried six yards on a fake punt in the second quarter that picked up a first down and allowed his team to take a 20-10 lead when Devin Rushing capped the 15-play, 80-yard drive on a fourth day play. In the first half, the Broncos hurt themselves. Two penalties on third down gave Air Force first downs on their first scoring drive. Thats uncharacteristic of us, Fleck said, adding that the penalties all seemed to come at critical junctures of the game. Air Force, which also had one of the best turnarounds in college football this season, became the first team since 2010 to go from a 10-loss season to a 10-win campaign. The Falcons were 2-10 in 2013 and finished 10-3 this season. Air Force ran for 284 yards and converted all four of its chances in the red zone. Western Michigan entered the game averaging 178.5 yards per game rushing but finished with only 79 on 26 carries. Give Air Force all the credit, Fleck said. It was like running uphill, both ways in the snow backwards against their defence. DENVER - A little bit tired and drained entering the second night of back-to-back games, the Portland Trail Blazers nevertheless put together a startling offensive flurry. So startling that Damian Lillard had to take a moment to fully comprehend what his team accomplished — 84 points in the first half.Thats the points you score in a full game, Lillard said.It certainly made for an easy rest of the way.Lillard had 27 points and a season-high nine assists as the Blazers used a big first half to rout the Denver Nuggets 130-113 on Wednesday night. The 84 points by the Blazers in the opening half was one basket away from matching the team record for a half (86) set against Golden State on Jan. 5, 1986. It was the most points scored in the first half by a Denver opponent since Phoenix scored an NBA-record 107 points on Nov. 10, 1990, according to Nuggets officials.Even more, the last time a team scored that many in any half was March 25, 2011, when Golden State had 84 in the first half against Toronto, according to STATSIt felt great, because everything that we wanted to do, youre in the flow of doing it, Lillard said. You want to get out in transition, play unselfish, you want to make shots. You want to defend. We did all those things. Thats as well as weve done that all season. So, was that as good as Portland can play?I dont want to put a ceiling on that, said Robin Lopez, who scored 15 of his 19 points in the first half. We were a little fortunate. Shots were falling. Part of that is kismet. Part of that is moving the ball. Part of that is us.The Blazers showed no signs of fatigue, despite expending plenty of energy the night before in coming back from a 23-point deficit to hold off Charlotte at the buzzer. They also beat Denver in Portland on Sunday, in a tighter game (116-100). This time they expected more energy out of the Nuggets, who dropped their sixth straight game in front of a small crowd on a bitterly cold night. We were expecting their best shot, expecting them to come out fired up, Lillard said. It felt kind of dry, with the crowd andd everything.dddddddddddd We knew that we would have to create our own energy. We did that.LaMarcus Aldridge usually gives the Nuggets nightmares, but he was kept in check, finishing with 12 points. He averaged 28.3 points against Denver a season ago, and had a career-high 44 points in a game last January. This was the first time all year Nuggets coach Brian Shaw had a full squad at his disposal. It didnt help. Shaw couldnt find the right combination to slow down the Blazers, who led 84-50 at the break. Thats quite a first-half explosion, especially considering Indiana beat Miami 81-75 earlier in the night. On a frigid night outside the Pepsi Center — minus-3 degrees and falling — the Nuggets were just as cold inside. They shot 37.8 per cent in the first half, including 1 for 8 from 3-point range, leading to plenty of boos from the sparse crowd. Its not easy for them to see us play like that, Danilo Gallinari said. I understand them. Hopefully, we can turn those boos into applause the next game.Lapses on defence proved costly for Denver, said Ty Lawson, who led the team with 32 points.Have to play better, he said.Denver actually went on a 15-0 run in the third quarter and still trailed by 21 points. Lillard ended any chance of a comeback when he hit back-to-back 3-pointers late in the quarter to restore the big lead. The game was so lopsided that Portlands starters were on the bench for the final quarter.I didnt (see this coming), Lillard said. Everybody was focused.___TIP INSTrail Blazers: Allen Crabbe filled in for Nicolas Batum, who was sidelined with a bruised knee. Crabbe finished with seven points. ... Reserve Chris Kaman had 16 points.Nuggets: The minute restrictions were finally lifted for Nate Robinson and Gallinari, who are both returning from knee injuries. ... J.J. Hickson had 14 points and 11 rebounds in his second game back. He missed the opening five games of the year, serving a suspension for violating the leagues anti-drug program.UP NEXTTrail Blazers: Host Brooklyn on Saturday.Nuggets: Visit Indiana on Friday.
